On August 8th, 2009 Cass Park hosted an open house to give the Ithaca community an opportunity to see what’s new in the park this summer. The Ithaca Children’s Garden also had their annual Turtle Egg Hatch Day, this year to celebrate the fourth birthday of Gaia the turtle . Activities organized by the Waterfront Trail included a historical tour along the waterfront trail, a children’s bike ride around the two mile loop, and a bird walk to celebrate the opening of the new bird kosk and garden. Charles Eldermire of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology led the bird walk tour, where 33 different bird species were seen along the edge of the Inlet during the course of the 90 minute walk. (For more information on the tour’s bird sitings visit: www.ebird.org). Carol Kammen, Tompkins County Historian, led the history tour and gave participants her view of the role our waterfront played in Ithaca’s development. Dave Hoffer and Erin Johnson lead an energetic band of youngsters on a two mile bike ride, and even the trikesters finished the whole loop!
